One to One Support Volunteer

Providing facility support

The North Vancouver Recreation Commission is committed to providing inclusive leisure opportunities for all members of the community.

If you or your child have a disability and would benefit from additional support while accessing NVRC facilities, we strive to provide one to one volunteers.

The Recreational Access Volunteer program matches adults and children with disabilities with volunteers who have experience or are interested in working with people with disabilities.

Volunteers can help in one of two ways:

  1. One to one in a registered program - A volunteer can assist a person on a regular basis in a NVRC course/program i.e. swim or skate lessons.
  2. One to one on a more flexible basis - A volunteer can assist a person to access various Recreation Commission services i.e. - using the weight room.

What can a volunteer do?

  • Provide support and encouragement
  • Help facilitate relationship building
  • Assist with accessing equipment - adjusting weights, reaching for equipment etc.

What are volunteers unable to do?

  • Assist with personal care needs - showering, changing etc.
  • Assist with transferring or lifting
  • Provide transportation to and from facility (inc. walking assistance)
  • Administer medication
  • Give fitness advice, training tips etc.
